Frequently Asked Questions With Answers:

Are you affliated with
or endorsed by .Mac and Apple?
Answer: NO. And let me say so again,
NO. We are simply avid users of a great product and service from
Apple and we created a little freeware item we think makes it that
much more enjoyable, and one we can't live without.

Does
dotMac Menu look at my password or do things to my .Mac account?
Answer: NO. And let me say so again,
NO. dotMac Menu works by using Apple's dotMacKit, a piece of software
(an SDK and API) useful for developers to integrate with their
.Mac service. This SDK keeps your password secure inside itself
and does not allow direct access to it. When dotMac Menu retrieves
your iDisk usage and expiration information this is again handled
by Apple's software, which then sends the information along to
the menu, which displays it. dotMac Menu does NOT directly access
or manipulate files or settings in your .Mac account.

Why don't you include
MenuCracker or Menu Extra Enabler and save me time? [applies
to dotMac 2.5 or lower]
Answer: A good question with hopefully
an equally good answer. There are three (3) reasons: 1) you
may already have one on your system if you use other 3rd party
menu extras, 2) we don't want to choose for
you, it's up to you ultimately, the consumer and user, 3) Menu
Extra Enabler is a product of Unsanity and
as such we can't include it, but we do provide links to both
so you can download and choose which you prefer to install.
As of dotMac Menu 2.6 we automatically include
MenuCracker with the installer in the dotMac Menu folder. This
will not have any adverse effect if you are already running one
of these products.

I double-clicked on the
new dotMac Menu I downloaded but it still looks like the old one to
me. What gives?
Answer: When Mac OS X launches a menu extra it
makes a copy of it for itself to use (in memory) and even if you double-click
to reload the menu extra it will automatically reuse the copy it already
has in memory. The solution to this is to restart the menubar beforehand
using the included Restart
Menubar script application (just double-click and it will do
the rest) and then double-click your new dotMac
Menu and you'll be ready to go!
