Frequently Asked Questions With Answers:

  1. My icons didn't update when I clicked "Apply" or when automatic dating was enabled. What gives?
    (Systems affected: 10.2.x specific)
  2. Answer: This is due to an Apple-acknowledged bug in the Finder with custom icons. DriveGauge makes every attempt possible to refresh the icon on the desktop and throughout the OS, and most menus and applications immediately show the new icon. The Finder in Jaguar does not however respect this. Tests in Panther indicate the problem will be addressed when a new Panther-specific version of DriveGauge is released.

  3. I installed the 10.2.8 update that was available in late September and DriveGauge won't launch, it just crashes. What gives?
    (System affected: 10.2.8 recalled update)

Answer: DriveGauge's Internet updating, news, and web links all check to see whether there is actually an Internet connection present instead of just failing or hanging when they can't get the information. The removed 10.2.8's files that DriveGauge uses do not contain some of the needed information and cause a crash. No workaround is planned to address this as it is no longer an officially supported product of Apple.

Update: DriveGauge has been tested against the October 2003 10.2.8 release to verify and it is fully compatible.

  4. I used DriveGauge 2.x and then downloaded 3.x. I don't see any gauges now. What gives?

Answer: DriveGauge 3 is completely different from its predecessor. DriveGauge 3 supports Gauge Styles and requires at least one (1) style to be present to actually show gauges. The DriveGauge 3 download included the DG 3 Upgrade Assistant which installs the 2.x Aqua Gauge Style. If you haven't done so run this first. If this issue persists, use the QuickFix menu item under the Help menu which will reset all your settings.

  5. Gauges show up on some of my drives and not others. What's going on?

Answer: DriveGauge takes the results of the df command and then creates the Drive List you see. When a small percentage is used (such as 0 to 10%) DriveGauge currently breaks when trying to match it's gauges (due to extra spaces from the formatted results of the command.) A future version (targeted for 3.2 at the latest, within the year) will resolve this known issue.

  6. Explain the default icon support & custom icon support.
Answer: DriveGauge reads & writes its custom icons to a file called .VolumeIcon.icns. This is where the Finder (and many other applications) put custom icons for a drive. The default icons in DriveGauge are internal to it and are NOT read from the actual OS X installation. Thus CandyBar icons are not supported. (this is something we are investigating for a future version) Custom icons are only supported in the .icns (Mac OS X Icon file) format, thus OS 9 style icons cannot be currently imported (but will be recognized if pasted in via the Finder and then DriveGauge is run.)
  7. I can't restore my old icons or deleted the gauged ones [backup/restore/delete issues]. Help!
Answer: DriveGauge tries it's best to back up your icons according to the schedule you set in DriveGauge 3 and each time in DriveGauge 2.x. When restore is ran it copies the backup icon over to be the icon. If it was incorrectly backed up it will incorrectly restore. To remove a gauged icon or incorrect backup you can use the Finder's Get Info window (select the affected drive and use the File > Get Info menu command) to see the icon and then select it, click to highlight the icon, and then click the Delete key. The Finder will then use the system's default icon.
  8. How much processing time does it take DriveGauge to work?
Answer: During the automatic updating process and during the manual apply, DriveGauge uses ~2-3% per volume (such that 3 volumes would use ~6%). This update occurs once per minute only with automatic updating enabled and takes less than 1 second per volume (test system: 867 Titanium Powerbook, 528 MB RAM.) Otherwise, the application uses ~10-15% during normal operations when running.
  9. Sometimes my gauge(s) doesn't look like its rotating, nudging or going back to its default (reset). Why?

Answer: Sometimes when using the current icon the gauge may draw behind it's old one, thus it's not visible. This has creeped up twice in testing and we are working to isolate this odd behavior but the simplest solution is to choose another icon such as the backup, hard drive, or a new custom icon. This has resolved it in all instances so far.

  10. Volumes are appearing that aren't connected and others that are attached aren't. Is DriveGauge broken?

Answer: No! DriveGauge stores a list of every drive it's ever seen and when it launches it tries it's best to determine which ones are present and which aren't. (this does appear interestingly as two drives when a local iDisk is kept under Panther)If you feel that the list is totally out of sync just go to the Help menu, click QuickFix, and restart DriveGauge when prompted (3.0.1 includes a warning dialog.) This will remove the old list and start fresh when launched, giving you the most current list.

  11. I can see gauges when I preview a drive, but not when applied, even after I restart. Is DriveGauge broken?

Answer: No! DriveGauge writes a new icon in place of the current icon and refreshes this accordingly. If your permissions are corrupted DriveGauge may no longer have permission to overwrite the icon, which results in a perfect preview without any visible signs of it actually applying. The solution is simple: run Apple's Disk Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder, and select your drive and click "Repair Permissions".
