Comparing Folders

After two folders have been selected a comparison can then be made. If auto-compare is enabled (which it is by default), the comparison selector sheet will appear automatically after choosing the second folder; otherwise when you are ready to compare use either the "Compare" toolbar item or its corresponding menu item under the File menu.

The comparison selector sheet has five options for you to choose from when comparing the contents of folders, as shown below.

Compare Folders - Comparison Selector Sheet

Once you've chosen which you'd like to use for the current comparision (Compare Folders will remember what you've chosen until you quit or change the option's setting) click Compare and the status text under the toolbar will update what phase of the comparison process it is at and what it is currently doing with an estimate of the progress visible in the progress bar on the right side of the status area.

To stop a comparison once it has started, click the circular X button next to the progress bar in the status area under the toolbar. This will tell the comparison engine that it should stop and it will then wind the curent comparison to a halt (which may take a few seconds), allowing you to change any of the settings or restart when it's not quite done and you are.

Tip: Uncheck all but one option and run compare to spot specific changes (such as only changed files that are locked or not to see if any files have been changed without your knowledge, or just with Date Modified to see what files are different because they've been modified.)

Tip: If a file changes in a folder, click "Compare" again to quickly compare the contents and update the Results with the changes.
