DriveGauge Reborn

Sunday, July 31st, 2005

As many know, DriveGauge isn’t exactly perfect. It’s great at what it does, and is highly unique, but just a few of the notable issues include:

  • drive percentages being switched or improperly assigned
  • required items for installation (themes, Growl, etc.)
  • custom icon support [no support for Mac OS 9 style icons]

As you can probably figure out from the title I’m pleased to say that as development on Compare Folders 2.5 winds down development on DriveGauge 4.0, a completely new [as in, rewritten from the ground up] version, is ramping up. It’s not going to be a quick endeavor but the Simplicity Engine alluded to awhile ago will most certainly live up to it’s name.

I’ll post details and pictures as I go along but I just wanted to share the good news 8)

Beta in the pipeline

Sunday, July 24th, 2005

This is a just a quick note to let users know that Compare Folders 2.5, for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, is getting ready to enter the beta-testing process.

There are a lot of enhancements in this release as well as entirely new features such as the the new side by side layout of results so the testers will have plenty to keep them busy. Compatibility with .Mac and Growl 0.7 has been improved and the look and feel rock in my opinion.

Barring anything unforeseen this week should be sufficient for shaking out anything major and addressing it. Once that’s taken care of the Help will be updated to reflect all the changes and new items and then I’ll be working on overhauling the Web site a bit. So look for the release within the next week to two weeks or if you are interested in beta-testing post a comment or drop me a line.

iUpdate Removal

Saturday, July 2nd, 2005

I’m contemplating removing support for the iUpdates feature in the next updates of each of our applications. There are several reasons for this including - it takes more time to prepare iUpdates and keep relevant information there at all times, the need to continue rennovating and enhancing the feature, the similarity to RSS and other delivery mechanisms, and much more.

Now that the new blogging system is in place it’s much easier and more efficient to keep each application’s category updated with news than to do so with iUpdates. If you find iUpdates more useful please post your thoughts in the comments or send an e-mail if you’re comment shy :-)
